We all need a holiday once in a while and for most of us our annual vacation is something we look forward to long in advance of its arrival. Life can be hectic and stressful meaning time spent with family and friends whilst on holiday is precious. What happens then if your long awaited holiday is ruined by something as avoidable as food poisoning?
Although in most cases food poisoning resolves within a few days, in some cases it can lead to more serious problems, depending on the type of infection, such as organ damage. If your holiday has been ruined by food poisoning you are eligible for compensation.
Causes of Food Poisoning
Hot spots for Brits affected by food poisoning whilst abroad are the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Cuba, Turkey, Mexico and Tunisia. Unfortunately, as beautiful as these countries are, their food and drink hygiene standards are not of the same level we have here in the UK. So, how can we contract the illness:-
• Most commonly eating food and/or drinking water that is contaminated.
• Drinking unpasteurised milk.
• Eating undercooked meat and/or eggs.
• Cross contamination in the kitchen.
Symptoms and Treatment of Food Poisoning
Common symptoms of food poisoning will most commonly include a minimum of three of the following:-
• Stomach cramps
• Diarrhoea
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Loss of appetite
• Mild fever
• Weakness
• Headaches
The above symptoms can be treated with the following:-
• Drink plenty of fluid – ideally water. This will help prevent dehydration.
• Rest.
• When you feel up to it try to eat bland, light meals to begin with. Toast, crackers and bananas are recommended.
If your symptoms are severe, you are pregnant, over 60, have a long term underlying condition or are a baby/child it is recommended you seek treatment from a doctor.
